My Biography

Photographers often are asked what our favorites assignments have been. I would usually tell people that every assignment is interesting in some way or another. But now I have a different answer. My favorite assignment was photographing the inauguration of Barack Obama. As people around the world struggle to break free of dictatorships and establish for themselves basic human rights, it was awe inspiring to watch representatives of every branch of our government come together for the peaceful and orderly transfer of power.

Here in Chicago, I, like many of my colleagues at the paper, have photographed countless scenes of violence and destruction. It has been incredible to witness people in the depths of despair, but it has also been uplifting to see many of those same people summon the strength to triumph over tragedy.
