Laura Smitherman
Head of Maryland News
My Role

Oversee the metro and business news departments, coordinating coverage of daily breaking news and in-depth enterprise at The Baltimore Sun and baltimoresun.com.

Our staff produces the most comprehensive coverage of the Baltimore region and news from around the state. Reporters cover the state's politicians from Washington to Annapolis and Baltimore, the high-powered health care and mutual fund industries, crime and other issues of interest to our readers, such as the environment and military. We take seriously our watchdog role in the community, holding politicians, businesses and other institutions to account.
My Biography

I have been at The Baltimore Sun since 2005, starting as a business reporter and then moving to the State House to cover the governor, General Assembly and Maryland politics. I became Head of Maryland News in April 2011.

Before joining The Sun, I worked at Bloomberg News in Washington, starting in the basement of the Securities and Exchange Commission before heading to Capitol Hill to cover Congress. My previous reporting life took me from Newsday in New York to the El Paso Times in Texas. Along the way, I also spent some time knocking around South America, freelancing and editing at the Santiago Times in Chile.
