My Role

As gardening and home columnist, I help Hampton Roads residents live the good life indoors and outdoors.

In these environmentally challenging times, I focus on organic gardening and green living, hoping to help residents realize how important it is to save Mother Nature for future generations.
My Biography

I've gardened all my life, having learned much of it from spending summers with my grandmother in Lynchburg, Va. There, I learned to make grape jelly from fruits on her arbor, how to shell butter beans by the thousands and even how to pick and string tobacco on a nearby farm. Those summers were some of the best times of my youth.

Today, husband Ken and I care for about an acre in Yorktown, Va., where most of my plants are native species meant to attract bees, butterflies and birds. Plants native to Virginia are very special in my garden.

I've taken landscape design and other horticulture-related classes at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. I'm also a master gardener in Yorktown.

I've also remodeled, decorated and built almost a dozen houses in the Hampton Roads area.

In the future, I would love to build a new, all-green house, small but luxurious and easy to live in.
My Interests

Gardening, of course, remodeling homes, interior decorating and design, fast/new cars, good food and some cooking, traveling and reading. Soon, I hope to get another miniature schnauzer because I really miss Trixie, my schnauzer companion for 17 years.
