Assistant Bureau Chief
My Role

I help coordinate news coverage of dozens of suburban communities in Chicago's western suburbs. My duties include: assigning breaking news stories and feature stories; editing stories for the daily Chicago Tribune, the weekly Chicagoland Extra section and the weekly TribLocal sections that circulate in the western suburbs; feeding stories to the Tribune's Breaking News Center; coordinating photo coverage with the bureau photo chief and the downtown photo desk; working on a daily basis with an extensive network of freelancers, who complement our full-time bureau staff by covering breaking news stories and writing features; filling in for bureau chief in her absence; working on occasion on the Tribune's downtown metro desk; participating in short-range and long-range planning.
My Biography

I have been an assistant bureau chief at the Chicago Tribune since January 2009. Prior to that I worked for three decades for the Daily Southtown, a newspaper that circulated in Chicago's south suburbs and in parts of the city. At the Southtown, I held a number of positions -- news reporter, sports reporter, sports editor, assistant metro editor, metro editor and editorial page editor. I was part of the staff that helped convert what was a twice-weekly paper into a daily paper in 1978. As editorial page editor, I was the founding editor of the paper's first Sunday perspective section. While a student at the University of Illinois, I also worked briefly for the Urbana-Champaign Courier. I have been honored to receive several awards during my career, both individually and in collaboration, from such organizations as the Chicago Headline Club, the Associated Press Sports Editors organization, the Illinois Press Association and Suburban Newspaper of America. I was born in Chicago. I have lived in the western suburbs for the last 20 years -- 10 in La Grange and the most recent 10 in Naperville.
My Interests

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, watching sports, cycling and avoiding work around the house.
