Hugh Lessig
Military reporter
My Role

I cover the military, a major presence here in Hampton Roads. The area is home to the world's largest naval base and the Navy SEALS. Two major military commands are headquartered here: the Air Force's Air Combat Command and the Army's Training and Doctrine Command. A large concentration of retired veterans settle in southeastern Virginia. The Hampton VA Medical Center is a major health care facility for the region. I also cover military politics and social issues that affect men and women in uniform.
My Biography

My hometown is Pen Argyl, Pa., part of a string of quarry towns known as the Slate Belt. I worked at two newspapers in my home state before coming to the Daily Press in 1997. I worked for eight years as the state politics reporter, based in Richmond, and covered the administrations of three governors.

Since December 2008, I have worked as the military reporter. Now I live about 20 minutes from Naval Station Norfolk.
My Interests

I run half-marathons (not full ones yet) and spend a lot of time reading and writing. I am a fan of old pulp magazines from the 1940s and film noir, which means I was probably born at the wrong time.

So far, the highlight of my short tenure as a military reporter has been covering the earthquake in Haiti while embedded with the Navy, and collecting a series of stories from our World War II veterans in Hampton Roads.
