Government Editor
My Role

I lead a team of reporters who cover the cities of Newport News and Hampton, including both cities' school districts, and the government and politics of Virginia -- where it's always election season.
My Biography

Prior to joining the Daily Press as State Editor in 2001, I was the editor of Inside Business -- a weekly business journal that (at the time) had editions in Richmond and Hampton Roads.

I came to Virginia in 1993 to attend graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University -- MFA in creative writing, class of '96. It didn't take long to figure out that winters in Virginia are far preferable to winters in Wisconsin, where I grew up, went to school, suffered frostbite on several occasions, and worked for 13 years for The Milwaukee Journal. When I left Milwaukee, I had the best job newspaper journalism has to offer -- staff writer on the paper's Sunday magazine.

I'm married to beautiful novelist Merry Reymond ("If Wishes Were Horses," "Dog People," "Burning Down the House" -- www.merryreymond.com). We live a few blocks from the Chesapeake Bay and share our home with a relentlessly happy bichon frise and a daft, orange, maine coon cat found one morning in a friend's garden.
My Interests

Buddhism. Golf. Buddhist golf -- sometimes referred to as "walking meditation." (I address both on my off-duty website/blog, NutherDuffer.com -- check it out.)

Music -- guitar, ukulele.

Books, fiction and non. Movies, preferably old.
