Dana Eagles
Communities Editor and Internship Coordinator
My Role

I manage the Communities team, which includes reporters who cover Lake, Osceola, Volusia and Seminole counties as well as the smaller cities and suburbs of Orange County. I also oversee El Sentinel, the Spanish-language weekly newspaper.

On the side, I coordinate the Sentinel's news internship program for college students, edit corrections and clarifications and enter the best work of Orlando Sentinel and OrlandoSentinel.com staff members in state and national journalism contests.
My Biography

During my long career at the Orlando Sentinel, I've worked as a reporter, copy editor, assistant business editor, lifestyle editor, deputy metro editor and deputy managing editor, first for features and later for news. From 2001 to 2009, I was the Sentinel’s staff development editor, directing newsroom hiring and training.

I have a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Central Florida and a master’s in media management from the University of Florida.

I've also taught reporting and editing as an adjunct instructor at UCF, where I'm a member of the Nicholson School of Communication's Hall of Fame.

As internship coordinator, I help students explore journalism as a career and foster ties between the Sentinel and colleges and schools. I'm the host and pronouncer for the annual Central Florida District Spelling Bee, which is sponsored by the Sentinel.

My Interests

I spend my free time listening to classical and jazz music, going to plays and concerts and reading contemporary novels and books about social and technological history. I'm also an incurable do-it-yourselfer, so I spend a lot of time hammering on a house that always needs repair.
