Robert Hamilton plans, directs, and coordinates photographic coverage for The Baltimore Sun newspaper. He oversees the photo desk and photo assignments desk to ensure that photographic assignments are fulfilled and that communication happens effectively between news desks, the photo desk, the design desk and the various editors in the newsroom in order to provide a cohesive artistic element to each day’s newspaper.
Robert Hamilton grew up in Northern Idaho and joined the United States Navy as a Photographer’s Mate upon graduation from high school. He served ten years in the Navy during which he did a one year fellowship at Syracuse University and was named Military Photographer of the Year in 1983. In August of 1983 he went to work as a staff photographer for The Sun newspaper in Baltimore where he covered a host of assignments such as starvation in Africa, illegal immigration on the Tex-Mex border and Inuit life in Northern Quebec. During his 27-year career at The Sun he was promoted to Assistant Director of Photography, Deputy Director of Photography and his current position of Director of Photography.
