Shawn covers motorsports and is the sports department web reporter at the Hartford Courant in Hartford, CT. In his role as the motorsports reporter Shawn covers four state racing facilities through the spring, summer and fall while also keeping readers up to date on the national motorsports scene. Shawn also handles the duties of web reporting for most in-state UConn football and men's and women's basketball events, a role which focuses on producing video content for Courant.com. Shawn also serves as a general assignment writer.
Over the last 13 years Shawn has been the lead reporter covering motorsports for The Courant. During that time he has brought everything from coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Sports Car Racing to Drag Racing and Motocross to the pages of The Courant. Shawn's emphasis has long been on covering the three NASCAR sanctioned short tracks in Connecticut. From the first green flag in April to the final checkered flag in October, Shawn blankets the state's auto racing scene. Shawn also produces the Courant's auto racing blog, which began in 2007. Shawn was The Courant's UConn football beat writer from 2005 through the summer of 2008, when he was named as The Courant's first sports web reporter. Shawn is also a regular contributor to the UConn football, men's basketball and women's basketball blogs at The Courant. Shawn began working at The Courant in 1993 as a high school clerk while still in college. Over the years Shawn has garnered numerous awards for his writing, along the way covering everything from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and world championship boxing to professional bull riding, water skiing and high school sports of all sorts. In March 2008 Shawn was recognized by the organizers of Speedway Illustrated's annual SpeedwayExpo for providing the top racing coverage in New England. In 2007, For his work covering the death of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver John Blewett III and for a feature on UConn football player Greg Lloyd, Shawn was recognized as a double-finalist in the annual Associated Press Sports Editor's national awards judging. Shawn is a Massachusetts native who has called the Nutmeg State home since 1989.
