I'm the paper's "Taking Names" columnist. I find politics and people fascinating. And I really like figuring out why things work the way they do -- and then sharing what I learn with readers. Usually that means writing about people. They're the ones who make thing happen. Sometimes for better. Sometimes for worse. Either way, I think you deserve to know who they are -- and how things can change. I like to empower readers. I also like to laugh. My column runs three days a week -- on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And I have an active blog at orlandosentinel.com/takingnames. I try to call 'em like I see 'em ... and "Take Names" as often as possible.
I think it' safe to say I always wanted to write for a newspaper. Back to the days when I was a small boy, and would write up copies of "The Maxwell House News" for the neighbors. Lead stories were something along the lines of "Scott's Dad Mows Grass." But the paper was free. So what did you want. I attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where I met my awesome, beautiful and incredibly patient wife. I worked for the Chapel Hill Herald and then the Winston-Salem Journal for four years until 1998, when the Sentinel brought me down to Orlando. We now have two kids and are living the good life. I consider myself very blessed.
Running, swimming, exercising in general. Spending time with my kids. Taking family trips to the book store where we can read good books or bad magazines while sipping coffee and hot chocolate. Playing poker. Visiting casinos. Vacationing. Cruising.
