My Biography

Matt started his journalism career in September 1999 at a weekly newspaper in Caribou, Maine. He arrived in Northern Maine from his native Western New York to work as a wilderness canoe guide for five summers while he was in college and after. Matt was promoted to chief guide after his first year. He trained other guides to lead groups, self sufficiently, for six to 14 days in the remote New England woods.

His favorite reporting assignments include interviewing author Kurt Vonnegut Jr., covering a reunion of the band Phish, riding in a hot-air balloon over the Adirondack foothills and cruising over The Travelers Championship golf tournament in the MetLife blimp.

He holds a master's degree in liberal arts from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., as well as bachelor's degrees in business and psychology from the State University of New York at Oswego.

Matt has had a job since age 11, when he started delivering the Buffalo News in his hometown of East Aurora, N.Y.
