My primary coverage area is high school sports. Specifically, I've spent the past several years handling the Super Six rankings for cross country, girls weightlifting, softball and girls track and field. Also I have compiled our weekly girls track and field honor roll. For the last year, I have written the Sentinel's Good Guys Column, that focuses on the positives of high school sports. The athletes, coaches and teams who work, not just to win games, but to try to make their communities better. I also have been coordinating our Classroom Stars coverage, which focuses on athletes who also are outstanding students.
I was born in Freeport, N.Y., and lived most of the first 12 years of my life in North Bellmore, N.Y. Moved to New Port Richey, Fl., with my parents when I was 13. I have been working as a sports writer for the past 36 years -- the last 32 at the Sentinel. I started out as a part-time sports writer for the New Port Richey Press (1974-76) and the St. Petersburg Times (1976-78), starting with the Sentinel in November 1978. Actually, I have been around newspapers most my life. I first worked as a newspaper boy for the Newsday and also delivered the Long Island Press. When I was in high school, I worked in the circulation department for the New Port Richey Press.
I enjoy most sports and spent much of my life playing baseball and softball. I also have coached various youth sports, including soccer, Little League baseball and girls softball.
