Editor, Assoc Managing
I'm the Associate Managing Editor for Editing and Presentation. Our staff includes copy editors, page designers, graphics producer and image technicians. We edit stories, write the headlines and captions, design page layouts, conceive and execute information graphics (charts, maps, diagrams etc.) and tone and color-correct images for publication...pretty much everything except write the stories, and some of us even do that in our spare time.
I was born and raised in Chicago and have lived here all my life. I started at the Tribune in 1976 as a part-time clerk while I was attending college at the University of Illinois-Chicago (back then it was known as Circle Campus). Since then, I have held a variety of positions here. I was in Sports for more than 10 years as an editor and also filled in as the Hit & Run columnist when Steve Rosenbloom needed a break. I was the bureau chief at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan and later served (along with Jane Hirt) as the founding co-editor of the Tribune's RedEye edition. In 2006, I was named Associate Managing Editor for Design and Graphics, the last post before my current one, which I have held since 2008.
I love anything and everything about Chicago. Although I spent most of my life in the city proper, I now live in the western suburbs with my wife, two daughters and our mutt Rudy. I root for all of our sports teams, but most fervently for the Blackhawks...and I am not a bandwagon jumper, but someone who actually saw Eric Nesterenko play in the flesh at the old Stadium. I'm a big music fan, especially indie/alternative. My favorite travel destinations in the U.S. are the Jersey Shore and the Outer Banks. I prefer Macs over PCs, books/magazines over TV/movies and summer/winter over spring/fall.
