My Role

Jared has written and reported sports and consumer stories for the Chicago Tribune since 2009.
My Biography

Jared's investigations at the Tribune revealed lax boxing safety laws, which prompted greater protections for fighters in Illinois; questionable practices of charities founded by Chicago sports figures, including Gale Sayers; the city of Chicago’s failure to conduct health inspections of its sports stadiums and Wrigley rooftops, which led to a revised city policy and higher frequency of inspections; resistance by government officials to disinfect Chicago River; how a Chicago high school basketball team won a state title when it was supposed to be ban the playoffs after its coach violated recruiting rules; and new evidence of the whereabouts of the puck used to win the 2010 Stanley Cup.

Jared co-wrote “Deadly Neglect,” a series that revealed a 10-year pattern of harmful care at a private Chicago facility where 13 developmentally disabled kids died under questionable circumstances. The articles prompted new laws to improve care at similar facilities. The series was a 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist for investigative reporting.

Previously, Jared spent more than three years at the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he won awards for his coverage of state and local government. He has also written for USA Today, MLB.com, and the Capital News Service in Washington, D.C., and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Orlando Sentinel and Baltimore Sun.

A native of Long Island, Jared is a graduate of the Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland-College Park.
