Jared Hopkins
Reporter
My Role
Jared has written stories for the Chicago Tribune since 2009.
My Biography
Jared currently writes about the tangling worlds of sports, athletes, money and the law, and what that means means for fans and consumers. Previously at the Tribune, he has reported on the environment, consumer issues, criminal justice and science.
His reporting has prompted greater protections for boxers and mixed martial arts fighters in Illinois; led to revised health inspection policies for the city's sports stadiums and Wrigley rooftops and revealed that a public stadium authority spent millions on a restaurant that the Chicago White Sox retain all profits.
Other stories chronicled new evidence of the whereabouts of the puck used to win the 2010 Stanley Cup and questionable practices of charities founded by Chicago sports figures, including Chris Zorich and Gale Sayers. He has also written in-depth profiles of athletes, including Chicago Bears All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
In 2011, Jared was named a Pulitzer Prize co-finalist for investigative reporting for “Deadly Neglect,” a series of articles that revealed a 10-year pattern of harmful care at a private Chicago facility where developmentally disabled kids died under questionable circumstances. The articles prompted new laws and sweeping statewide reforms.
Previously, Jared spent more than three years at the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he won awards for his coverage of state and local government. He has also written for USA Today, MLB.com, and the Capital News Service in Washington, D.C., and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Orlando Sentinel and Baltimore Sun.
A native of Long Island, Jared is a graduate of the Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland-College Park.
